Our squadron was formed in April, 1961 and is incorporated as one of 22 squadrons in
the Pacific Mainland District of the
national Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons
organization. Our membership (usually of about 350) is comprised of power
boaters and sailors, owners and non-owners. Squadron members make full use of
the many waterways available to them on the coasts of British Columbia and
Washington State.
Our most important civic service activities are to teach the basic Boating
Course to the general public and to promote boating safety and boating
pleasure. We offer a variety of boating educational courses which include
coastal navigation, seamanship, weather and boat maintenance. We are one of the main providers of
the Canadian Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operator
card through our BoatPro Course.
This certificate is now a requirement for the operation of powered vessels for some
members of the boating public. As of January 2001,Canadian Power Squadrons has been
given the sole responsibility for administering the
marine radio Restricted Operator Certificate examinations. This certificate is required for the
operation of all marine VHF radios in Canadian waters. Our Squadron now has several
Recognized Examiners for this certificate. All our work is
done by volunteers as none receive any remuneration for the important work that they do.
Our members also contribute to the safety of our waterways by being vigilant in
reporting weather conditions under the Marine Reporting
(MAREP) program, as well as in reporting navigational hazards and problems
with the Aids to Navigation which are maintained by the Canadian Coast Guard.
